Caring for our World

Look deep into nature,
and then you will understand everything better.
~ Albert Einstein ~

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

It has been 75 years since the death of the last known thylacine, a sobering reminder of the permanence of extinction. As we reflect on the tiger we are reminded of another Tasmanian icon that is still with us, the Tasmanian devil. It is threatened but we can and must save it from extinction.

Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) threatens the existence of the Tasmanian devil.
In some areas of the state more than 90 per cent of the Tasmanian devil population has been wiped out.
DFTD kills devils within three to six months of contracting it because tumours hamper their ability to eat, causing the animals to die of starvation. The disease is spread through biting.
